Andújar Leads Semi-Finals Line-Up At Ferrero Challenger Open

The semi-finals at the €46,600 Ferrero Challenger Open are set. Top seed Pablo Andújar will lead the line-up following a 7-6(4), 7-6(2) win over Joao Domingues from Portugal in rain-delayed match on Friday evening in Alicante.

The World No. 70 from Spain, who lifted the trophy at the JC Ferrero Equelite Tennis Academy last year, outpointed his opponent 98-86 to prevail after two hours and 17 minutes. Next up for Andújar will be his compatriot Carlos Taberner. The 21-year-old wild card entry rallied past No. 11 seed Salvatore Caruso of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Taberner capitalized on six of his 17 break point chances to advance after two hours and 33 minutes.

Jose Hernandez-Fernandez knocked out the tournament’s No. 3 Pedro Sousa of Portugal, winning 4-6, 7-6(9), 6-4. The 29-year-old from the Dominican Republic secured victory in two hours and 10 minutes to face Pedro Martínez in the stage of the last four. The No. 12 seed beat fellow Spaniard Mario Vilella Martínez 6-3, 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 36 minutes.
