Maden Masters BMW Open Qualifying To Reach The Main Draw

MUNICH, April 28, 2019

Four Germans began their quest for a spot in the main draw of the BMW Open by FWU, but with Yannick Maden only one player made it into the exclusive 28-man field. The 29-year-old from Stuttgart defeated Lukas Rosol from the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-2 on a mostly sunny but chilly Sunday afternoon in Munich.

Maden saved all four break points he faced, capitalizing on four of his own eight chances to advance in one hour and nine minutes.

“I played a solid match today,” Maden told Tennis TourTalk. “I had played him twice before and emerged victorious both times. I like his style of play, as I am able to read his game pretty well.”

Maden will appear in his 10th main draw on the ATP Tour, for the second time in Munich. Last year, he lost in the second round to compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff. “It’s always cool to play in Germany, in front of your home crowd and I hope that I can continue my good run, winning a few more matches here,” the World No. 104 said. Up next will be Christian Garin from Chile.

Maden will be joined in the main draw by Lorenzo Sonego of Italy. The top seed of the qualifying fought past Henri Laaksonen from Switzerland 6-0, 5-7, 7-6(4) to set a first-round clash with eighth favourite Marton Fucsovics from Hungary.

Thiago Monteiro from Brazil also qualified for the main draw with a 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4 victory over Russia’s Andrey Rublev. The 24-year-old will take on Jan-Lennard Struff from Germany and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who rallied past Prajnesh Gunneswaran from India 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, will challenge Budapest champion Matteo Berrettini of Italy.

Munich Moments

• Alexander Zverev, who will go for the three-peat in Bavaria’s capital city this year, met the media ahead of his first match. The top seed said that he has not only come to Munich without coach Ivan Lendl, who suffers from pollen allergies and will return to the tour at Roland Garros, but also without his father. Alexander Sr. had to go to hospital for a couple of days.

After he had parted ways with Patricio Apey, Zverev is also his own manager right now.
“I have to spend a few hours on the cell phone almost every day, that’s why I lost a bit focus over the past few weeks,” Zverev was quoted by the dpa. He also revealed that Zverev and his girl-friend Olga Sharypova broke up.

• Ahead of his Munich debut, Karen Khachanov took a couple of practice sessions, first with US-American Denis Kudla on the show court, located at centre of the venue, later with his coach as well as with German young gun Rudolf Molleker.
