In front of about 500 spectators, top-seed and defending champion Pablo Carreῆo-Busta opened his campaign at the € 42,500 ATP Challenger Copa Sevilla successfully, winning his first round match on Tuesday against Marco Bortolotti 6-3, 6-2. The 24-year-old Spaniard didn’t face a break point and converted three of his own to finish the Encounter after 61 minutes facing Axel Michon next.
The tournament’s number two Daniel Gimeno-Traver crashed out, losing 3-6, 4-6 to Pedro Cachin. The world number 248 from Argentina won 83% of his first service points and capitalized on four of his eight break points to prevail in one hour and 11 minutes.
Cachin will face Matwe Middelkoop next. The Dutch qualifier beat Pedja Krstin 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in one hour and 28 minutes.
Third seed Iῆigo Cervantes advanced to the second round, celebrating a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Jozef Kovalik. The 25-year-old Spaniard won 75% of his first service points to close the match after one hour and 39 minutes. Nine minutes faster was Maxime Teixeira, beating Fernando Romboli 7-5, 6-3 to set a second round meeting with Cervantes.
The tournament’s number five Adrian Menéndez-Maceiras suffered a first round defeat, losing 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 to Miljan Zekic in two hours and three minutes to face Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo next, who emerged victorious from the all-Spanish-affair with Juan Lizariturry. The 37-year-old from Alicante beat the Basque qualifier 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 43 minutes.
Sixth seed Renzo Olivo set a second round clash with Lamine Ouahab. The world number 176 from Argentina overcame Spanish wild card Mario Vilella Martinez, rallying back 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 in one hour and 41 minutes.
