Joao Magalhaes Hueb de Menezes of Brazil captured his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour, winning the $54,160 Samarkand Challenger, held on clay at the Tennis Club “Dinamo”. The World No. 286, who had never reached a quarterfinal prior to this week, upset top seeded Frenchman Corentin Moutet 7-6(2), 7-6(7) in Sunday’s title match.
Magalhaes Hueb de Menezes won 55 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and one minute. The 22-year-old from Uberaba took away from Uzbekistan $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP-Ranking points.
On Saturday, Goncalo Oliveira of Portugal and Andrei Vasilevski from Belarus rallied past local favourite Sergey Fomin and Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia to clinch the doubles title. The top seeds came back from a set down to seal a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory in 63 minutes.
