No. 2 women’s seed Jil Teichmann of Switzerland, who three weeks ago lifted her first WTA tour-level trophy when she won the Prague Open, was upset in the first round of French Open qualifying on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Teichmann, a former world junior No. 3 who is ranked 87th in the WTA rankings, lost to 208th-ranked Katie Swan of Great Britain, 6-4, 6-2. Swan, a member of the British Fed Cup squad, is trying to reach her first Grand Slam main draw outside of Wimbledon.

Swan hit 15 winners and took advantage of four service breaks against Teichmann. The 21-year-old Swiss committed 31 unforced errors during the one hour and nine minute match on Court 7. Next, Swan will face Wang Xiyu of China, ranked No. 144, who advanced over No. 166 Danielle Lao of the United States, 6-1, 6-1.

“Jil’s a great player who’s come in with a lot of confidence, but I’m so happy with the way I played,” Swan 20, said, quoted by the Roland Garros website. “I really believed in myself right from the start.

“I’m definitely more comfortable with the expectation now. It’s tough, especially transitioning from the juniors. I was much more comfortable there; I had a lot of kids around who I was friends with and it’s a tough transition to the pros but I think I’m doing a good job.”

Overall, it was a good day for the British women as No. 5 seed Heather Watson, currently ranked No. 105, moved into the next round with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over No. 164 Bibiane Schoofs of the Netherlands. Watson is trying to reach her four French Open main draw.

A total of 14 women’s seeds remain going into Thursday’s second round.

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, No. 1 seed Tennys Sandgren of the United States, ranked No. 87, needed just an hour to beat No. 225 Mats Moraing of Germany, 6-2, 6-2. Also, advancing were: No. 4 Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland, ranked No. 104, who defeated No. 208 Facundo Arguello of Argentina, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3; No. 6 seed Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine, ranked No. 111, beat No. 263 Uladzimir Ignatik of Belarus, 7-6 (2), 6-4; No. 7 Thiago Monteiro of Brazil, ranked No. 113, beat No. 430 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc of France, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; and No. 17 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, ranked No. 133, bested No. 160 Joao Domingues of Portugal, 6-2, 7-5.

In an all-German matchup, No. 177 Rudolf Molleker upset No. 16 seed Matthias Bachinger, ranked No. 127, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, on the strength of nine service aces and 43 winners during their two-hour match. Also, No. 8 seed Yannick Maden of Germany, ranked No. 115, moved to within one win of the main draw with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 comeback win over No. 224 Mikael Torpegaard of Denmark that lasted two hours and 14 minutes on Court 11. Maden controlled the net, winning 11 of 19 opportunities, broke Torpegaard seven times in 10 tries and hit 23 winners. He outpointed his opponent 96 to 85.

By the numbers

When 15-year-old Cori “Coco” Gauff of the United States, the current reigning French Open junior girls’ champion, won her first-round qualifying match over Anita Raina of India, 6-4, 6-4, on Tuesday, she became the youngest female player to win a Grand Slam match (qualifying or main draw) since Martina Hingis at the 1995 Australian Open. Gauff, who is the youngest female competing in the women’s qualifying draw, won her first WTA main draw match at the Miami Open in March.

Looking ahead to Thursday

Thursday’s order of play includes 24 women’s second-round and eight men’s third round matches. Among the most intriguing matches are men’s No. 8 seed Yannick Maden of Germany against No. 17 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, and in the women’s draw, No. 1 seed Bernarda Pera of the U.S. facing No. 185 Zhang Kai-Lin of China.
