NÜRNBERG, May 25, 2019

Yulia Putintseva clinched her first title on the WTA Tour, winning the Nürnberger Versicherungscup on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The top seed of the €250,000 WTA International event from Kazakhstan rallied past first-time finalist Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Putintseva broke her opponent’s serve six times and won 53 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and 17 minutes.

“It’s unbelievable, honestly. I enjoyed myself and I was fighting until the end. That’s what helped me to win. It was a great fight, a great game for the final,” Putintseva said during her post-match on-court interview.

Honestly, it was a little bit of luck, because I was running and hoping the ball was going to go in. When I was out of position, I was running and hit some incredible shots. My character is to keep fighting.”

Putintseva collects €34,677 in prize money as well as 280 WTA-Ranking points.

Earlier in the day, Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Yifan Xu from China took the doubles title. The top seeds came back from a set down to overcome Sharon Fichman of Canada and US-American Nicole Melichar, winning 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-5. The encounter lasted one hour and 40 minutes.
