Three-time champion Serena Williams was stunned in the third round at Roland Garros on a sunny Saturday afternoon by unseeded US-American Sofia Kenin. The 37-year-old was seeded 10th in Paris, but lost 6-2, 7-5 to her 20-year-old compatriot.

Kenin hit 23 winners compared to 17 unforced errors to seal victory in one hour and 32 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

In only her second main draw appearance in Paris, @SofiaKenin takes out 3x Champion Serena Williams 6-2 7-5.

“I think she played really well. I feel like she, in that first set in particular, she hit pretty much inches from the line, and I haven’t played anyone like that in a long time,” Williams had to admit.

Kenin will next play No. 8 seeded Australian Ashleigh Barty, who edged out Germany’s Andrea Petkovic 6-3, 6-1 in exactly one hour of play on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

“It took a little while to get used to the conditions, a little bit with the light, the spin of the court. Obviously, the weather here can change how the courts played dramatically. So I think it took some time to adjust. But once I got my feet used to the court, it was much better today,” Barty said.

Earlier in the day, Polish teenager Iga Swiatek bounced back from a first-set bagel to defeat Monica Puig and reaches the second week in her first-ever French Open. The 18-year-old won 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 48 minutes on Court 1 to set up a clash against defending champion Simona Halep.

“I’m a really aggressive player, so I was trying to let her behind the baseline as much as possible and trying to just put so many balls in and just don’t give her easy points. I think it was really good and it was working, and I think her serve today wasn’t so good, so I was trying to use that second set serve,” Katerina Siniakova said about her game plan after taking out World No. 1 Naomi Osaka earlier in the day.

A disappointed Osaka said: “I think this tournament I have had a feeling that was different to the other Grand Slams, or, like, every other Grand Slam that I have played, because usually I find it very freeing and fun, and this time around I was kind of tense the entire time.

“So I would just say I’m very disappointed in how I played, and I wish I could have done better. But I can’t turn time, so…”
