HALLE, June 15, 2019
Roger Federer will open his quest for a 10th title at the NOVENTI Open against John Millman. The 29-year-old Australian defeated Federer in the Round of 16 at last year’s US Open. Their overall head-to-head record is tied at 1-1. The World No. 3 from Switzerland, who will make his 17th tournament appearance this year, is aiming to lift his first title in Halle since 2017.
No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, who lost his first match on grass this season against Dustin Brown at this week’s MercedesCup in Stuttgart, will open his title bid against Robin Haase from the Netherlands. Zverev finished runner-up in Westphalia in 2016 and 2017.
“These are demanding, but also solvable tasks for Roger and Sascha,” tournament director Ralf Weber commented.
Third favourite Karen Khachanov of Russia will take on last year’s Turkish Airlines Open Antalya winner Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina. No. 6 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia will face MercedesCup finalist Matteo Berrettini from Italy. Defending champion and No. 4 seed Borna Coric of Crotia will open his Halle campaign against #NextGenATP Spaniard Jaume Munar.
Reigning Roland Garros doubles champions Kevin Krawitz and Andreas Mies will play Dustin Brown and Tim Pütz in an all-German first-round encounter. Alexander and Mischa Zverev will take on Ben McLachlan and Jan-Lennard Struff. Top seeds Lukas Kubot of Poland and Brazilian Marcelo Melo will open against the all-Dutch combination of Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop.
