At just age 15 years and 3 months, Cori “Coco” Gauff of the United States has qualified for the 2019 Wimbledon ladies’ main draw. En route, she didn’t lose a set during her three qualifying matches this week at Roehampton. Among her wins, Gauff beat No. 1 seed Aliona Bolsova of Spain, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round.

On Thursday, Gauff, ranked No. 301, officially became the youngest woman to qualify for Wimbledon in the Open Era – and youngest since wild card Laura Robson of Great Britain in 2009 – when she defeated 129th-ranked Greet Minnen of Belgium, 6-1, 6-1, in just 51 minutes.

Gauff hit 16 winners and just 10 unforced errors while causing Minnen to commit 22 unforced errors. She broke her Belgian opponent six times while surrendering just one break. Gauff outpointed Minnen 60-34.

“I just felt pretty good,” said Gauff, interviewed after her win by Wimbledon TV. “I’m still in shock. I served well and I played pretty good the whole match. I was just in the zone today.”

Gauff, who won the French Open juniors at age 14, will make her Grand Slam main draw singles debut at Wimbledon next week. Last year, she played in the Wimbledon juniors. Now, she’s among the 128 best players in the Wimbledon main draw.

“Last year, I didn’t think I would be here. It means a lot. I knew if I kept working hard, my dreams would come true,” said Gauff.

“Playing against the top players in the world is going to be a different feel.”
