Three left-handed seeds led Tuesday’s order of play at the Moselle Open in Metz.

Sixth seed Martin Klizan defeated 2008 Metz finalist Paul-Henri Mathieu for a second time in their third tour meeting. The world number 35 from Slovakia led 6-7, 6-3, 3-2 before the 33-year-old Frenchman was forced to retire due to an achilles injury. Klizan will take on Vasek Pospisil next, who defeated Aleksandr Nedovyesov, winning 6-1, 7-5 in 70 minutes.

The tournament’s number seven Adrian Mannarino emerged victorious from the all-French-affair, winning 6-2, 7-5 against Vincent Millot. It was the second win for Mannarino after the pair had met in Montpellier last year. In this encounter, the 27-year-old saved all three break points he faced and won 80% of his first service points to close the encounter after one hour and 22 minutes.

Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco also advanced to the second round through a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over German young gun Alexander Zverev. The 31-year-old Spaniard struck 13 aces, saved all of the seven break points he faced and converted three of his own to close the encounter after two hours and 11 minutes. Verdasco will play Gilles Muller next, who defeated Aljaz Bedene in yesterday’s match 6-3, 6-4,

Mischa Zverev overcame Pablo Carreῆo-Busta, winning 6-2, 6-7, 6-1. The German qualifier hit 13 aces and won 82% of his first service points to claim the match in one hour and 30 minutes, setting a second round meeting with third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

In the remaining encounter between two qualifiers Edouard Roger-Vasselin beat Kenny de Schepper, winning 6-4, 7-6. The 31-year-old Frenchman withstood eight aces from his compatriot, saved the only break point faced and converted one of his own to prevail in one hour and 36 minutes. Roger-Vasselin will face second seed Gilles Simon in the second round.
