Javier Barranco Cosano continued his good run of form in Braunschweig this week. On Wednesday, the 20-year-old Spaniard knocked off No. 16 seed Marco Trungelliti of Argentina 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Sparkassen Open.

Barranco Cosano, who entered the main draw of the ATP Challenger 90 event by his ITF-Ranking, capitalized on all of his four break point chances to seal victory in one hour and 28 minutes. The World No. 399 in the ATP-Rankings defeated Maximilian Marterer of Germany and No. 2 seed Hugo Dellien from Bolivia earlier in the week and will next take on Jozef Kovalik from Slovakia. Barranco Cosano clinched five ITF Pro Circuit titles and is bidding for a place in his first semi-final on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Later in the afternoon, top seed Casper Ruud defeated German youngster Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-5. The World No. 62 from Norway outpointed his opponent 73-55 to advance in one hour and 36 minutes. Ruud will next taek on Thiago Monteiro of Brazil. The sixth favourite battled past No. 11 seed Gianluca Mager of Italy 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(5) in two hours and 47 minutes.

Elsewhere, third seed Henri Laaksonen had to fight hard to overcome Mats Moraing from Germany. The 27-year-old Swiss withstood 10 aces from his opponent, hitting seven of his own to prevail by the score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 after one hour and 54 minutes. Laaksonen will next face Czech veteran Lukas Rosol, who outlasted No. 5 seed Kamil Majchrzak of Poland 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Tobias Kamke remains the last German left in the singles draw. The 33-year-old from Lübeck dismantled compatriot Johannes Haerteis 7-5, 6-1 in one hour and 25 minutes. “I am really happy to have started a good run here,” Kamke said. Up next for Germany’s former Davis Cup player will be Attila Balazs from Hungary, who benefited from the retirement of Argentina’s Pedro Cachín, leading 6-2, 4-4.
