Current World No. 201 Daniel Brands has announced his retirement from professional tennis.
In an interview with the Bavarian radio station Bayerischer Rundfunk, the 31-year-old German said: “Two years ago I had to undergo a knee injury and the goal was to come back and to return to the Top 200. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. I am not getting any younger and I think it is the right decision to put an end on playing tour-tennis and to focus on new tasks.”

Brands achieved a career-high No. 51 on August 19, 2013 soon after beating Roger Federer to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP event in Gstaad. The Deggendorf native is a four-time semi-finalist on the ATP Tour, enjoyed a great run to the fourth round at 2010 Wimbledon and represented Germany in the Davis Cup 2013. Brands clinched seven career titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. In 2014 he suffered from mononucleosis but managed to lift another Challenger trophy in Recanati last season.
Brands will continue to play team tennis at the Tennis Club Großhesselohe and aims to become a tennis coach, starting a course later in the year.
