Jeremy Chardy headlined Wednesday’s second round action of the Swedish Open. The 32-year-old Frenchman knocked out Cristian Garin of Chile, the top seed of the ATP 250 clay-court event in Bastad.

Chardy fired 12 aces, winning 79 per cent of his first service points to seal a 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour and 34 minutes.

“I love Sweden, I love Bastad but I never win a match,” Chardy said after his second win this week during his on-court interview. “I try to come back every year and this year is good.”

The World No. 80 will next take on another player from Chile, as Nicolas Jarry defeated local wild card entry Mikael Ymer 7-5, 6-3. The No. 5 seed from Santiago broke the 20-year-old Swede’s serve four times to advance in one hour and 41 minutes.

Fernando Verdasco, second seed in Bastad, also fell in the second round. The Spanish veteran and two-time Bastad finalist lost 6-2, 6-4 to compatriot Albert Ramos Vinolas. The 31-year-old Barcelona native converted four of his 14 break point chances to prevail after one hour and 46 minutes. 2016 champion Ramos Vinolas will next play Roberto Carballes Baena. The 26-year-old Spaniard edged past Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-1, 7-6(4). The final encounter of the day lasted one hour and 41 minutes.
