Seeds Start To Tumble At Binghamton Challenger

BINGHAMTON, July 25, 2019

Second round action at the Levene Gouldin & Thompson (LG&T) Tennis Challenger got underway on Wednesday with the top seeds starting to tumble.

First up on Bud Koffman Center Court, No. 16 seed JJ Wolf took a quick loss to fellow American Collin Altamirano. Wolf was unable to find a way past Altamirano, with the 23-year-old closing out the match 6-2, 7-5. It was the same story for Marc Polmans and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, as both players suffered second round losses early in the day.

Later in the afternoon, Alex Rybakov, fresh off his title in Iowa City, took on the No. 3 seed and wild card, Sergiy Stakhovsky, in a tight three-set battle. Rybakov was able to take the opening set in a tiebreak, but Stakhovsky was able to fight back and force the third. In the decisive set it was Rybakov who would come out on top, winning the match 7-6(8), 4-6, 7-6(5). Also falling was No. 5 seed Noah Rubin. The New York native went the distance with Teymuraz Gabashvili, but was unable to close out the match. Top seed Ramkumar Ramanathan also suffered a three-set blow to Alexander Ritschard.

Off the court, the tournament hosted a Dog Adopt-A-Thon sponsored by Broome County Humane Society. It was also USTA Member Appreciation Day with all USTA members receiving free admission to the event. On Thursday, the tournament will host the Dick’s Youth Tennis Clinic and more! The event will offer Kids tennis lessons & play, face painting, animal education, and more! It is ppen to public & free of charge. The event will take place in the upper parking lot at Recreation Park. The tournament will also host a Pickleball Demonstration at 4:30 p.m.

Third round action will get underway at 10:00 a.m. with No. 11 seed Yuichi Sugita taking on Edan Leshem. The featured evening match will have 17-year-old #NextGenATP star Jannik Sinner battling it out against No. 7 seed Mitchell Krueger. The remainder of first round doubles matches will also take place as players look to grab their spot in the quarterfinals.
