Teymuraz Gabashvili advanced to the second round of the Internazionali di Manerbio Trofeo “Dimmidisi” with a three-set win over young Italian Jacopo Berrettini on Tuesday afternoon. The 34-year-old Georgia native, nicknamed Tsunami, took the opening set in only 18 minutes and broke his opponent’s serve five times to seal a 6-0, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory in one hour and 52 minutes.

“It was a very complicated match, even though the first set was unexpectedly easy,” former Top 50 player Gabashvili said. “He wasn’t ready, I don’t know. I knew he would give everything in the second set and I lost in the tie-break.

“The third was very tight. He played well, but I improved, too. I served well and stayed calm. In these situations you have to wait for the opponent’s mistakes. It was very hot, the balls were flying and he could hardly hit a winner with every shot. If he did, he would be ranked inside the Top 10. I took advantage of it, broke his serve and closed the match out.”

Gabashvili, who is accompanied by his wife and daughter this week in Italy, will next take on No. 3 seed Kimmer Coppejans of Belgium.

Coria, Arnaboldi into third round

Fernando Coria of Argentina booked his spot in the third round of the ATP Challenger 80 clay-court event. The No. 4 seed edged past compatriot and ITF-entry Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4. Coria outpointed his opponent 109-100 after two hours and 33 minutes of play. Up next for the World No. 163 will be Scott Griekspoor from the Netherlands, who defeated No. 15 seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile 6-3, 6-2 in 64 minutes.

Andrea Arnaboldi also made it into the stage of the last 16. The No. 8 seed from Italy beat Gerard Granollers of Spain 6-3, 6-3. The encounter ended after one hour and 24 minutes.
