Lorenzi Records 400th Challenger Match Win

Friday’s quarterfinal action at the Internazionali di Manerbio Trofeo “Dimmidisi” was headlined by Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi. The 37-year-old Rome native rallied past ITF-entry Sadio Doumbia of France, winning 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 to score his his 400th match win on the ATP Challenger Tour, joining Spaniard Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo as the only players to achieve the feat.

Lorenzi struck 10 aces, winning 65 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 12 minutes. The top seed of the €46,600 clay-court event, who clinched 21 ATP Challenger career titles, will next take on Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia, who fought past seventh favourite Andrea Arnaboldi from Italy 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 45 minutes.

Coria, Gaio advance

Federico Coria defeated Hungarian youngster Zsombor Piros 6-4, 6-4. The No. 4 seed from Argentina outpointed his opponent 71-60 after one hour and 33 minutes. Coria will play Federio Gaio in the semi-finals. The No. 5 seed benefited from the retirement of fellow Italian Lorenzo Giustino.

Gaio was leading 4-2 in the first set when the No. 2 seed was forced to stop playing due to a right elbow injury. Both players also had to play their third-round matches earlier in the day.

“It was a long and difficult day. I woke up very early to be ready at 10 am.” Gaio said after reaching his fourth semi-final of the season.
