The Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati is the second of back-to-back summer North American hard-court ATP Masters 1000 events, following the Coupe Rogers in Montreal.
Top seed Novak Djokovic is the defending champion. He will look to retain the trophy one year after completing his Career Golden Masters at this tournament. Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Western & Southern Open on Sunday, citing fatigue after winning his record-extending 35th Masters 1000 title earlier in Canada. Third seed and seven-time champion Roger Federer returns to action for the first time since Wimbledon.
They will be joined in the field by former World No. 1 Andy Murray, who will compete in singles for the first time since undergoing hip resurfacing surgery after the Australian Open. Nine of the Top 10 players in the ATP Rankings are in the draw.
