Zsombor Piros emerged victorious from Friday’s battle of the teenagers to reach the semi-finals of the Acqua Dolomia Serena Wines Tennis Cup – Internazionali del FVG in Cordenons. The 19-year-old from Hungary defeated Thiago Seyboth Wild from Brazil 6-4, 6-4.
Piros broke his 19-year-old rival’s serve three times to advance in one hour and 34 minutes. The Budapest native will appear in the stage of the final four at ATP Challenger level for the first time in his career taking on ITF-entry Christopher O’Connell. The 25-year-old Australian fought past Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. O’Connell won 55 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 25 minutes.
Later in the evening, Markus Eriksson continued his good run of form by defeating Argentine Andrea Collarini 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The World No. 320 from Sweden, who knocked out top seed Paolo Lorenzi in the third round, capitalized on six of his 11 break point chances to secure victory in two hours and 27 minutes. Eriksson will next face Jeremy Jahn of Germany, who edged out No. 11 seeded Italian home hope Gian Marco Moroni 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(2). The 29-year-old Munich native finished the encounter after two hours and 21 minutes.
Saturday’s play at the Eurosporting Cordenons Complex will start with the doubles final when Tomislav Brkic from Bosnia and Herzgovina and Croatia’s Ante Pavic will oppose Nikola Cacic of Serbia and Antonio Sancic from Croatia. Semi-finals in singles will go underway not before 5 pm local time.
