Top seed Steve Darcis lost his opening match at the Ethias Trophy in Mons against Maxime Teixeira 7-5, 3-6, 3-6. The French qualifier hit nine aces and won 82% of his first service points to seal victory in one hour and 53 minutes.
In the second round matches, last week’s champion from Orleans Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Mirza Basic, winning 7-6, 6-4. The 25-year-old German smashed nine aces and saved all two break points he faced to prevail in one hour and 16 minutes. Struff will take on Dennis Novak next. The world number 239 from Austria beat Lukas Lacko 7-6, 6-3 in 82 minutes.
Kenny De Schepper, who knocked out local hero Ruben Bemelmans in yesterday’s main match, advanced to the quarterfinals, winning 7-6, 6-3 against Norbert Gombos. The world number 133 from France withstood seven aces and won 81% of his first Service points to close the encounter after one hour and 44 minutes.
De Schepper will play qualifier Karen Khachanov next. The Russian teenager defeated James Ward 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in one hour and 29 minutes.
Eighth seed Paul-Henri Mathieu fell to Andrea Arnaboldi. The 27-year-old Italian fired ten aces and won 69% of his first service points to seal a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory in one hour and 28 minutes.
