VIENNA, August 20, 2019
Organizers of the Erste Bank Open, to be held on 19 to 27 October 2019, announced on Monday that Daniil Medvedev will come to Vienna. The red-hot Russian finished runner-up at the Citi Open in Washington as well as the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal and clinched his biggest title at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati last Sunday.
“Daniil Medvedev has played an important role in my thoughts for some time. I then received an e-mail from him requesting, almost timidly, whether there would be a chance to play in Vienna this year,” tournament director Herwig Straka stated in a press release.
“Daniil Medvedev plays a sensational season and has not satisfied his hunger for success. We are very pleased that he will come to Vienna for the first time. I am convinced that with his attractive style of play he will delight the spectators inside the Wiener Stadthalle.”
The World No. 5 will join home favourite Dominic Thiem, Kei Nishikori of Japan, fellow Russian Karen Khachanov. Frenchman Gael Monfils, Australia’s enfant terrible Nick Kyrgios and Canadian young guns Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime will also be part of the line-up of the ATP 500 event.
The Austrian capital of Vienna is the country’s most populous city with 1.7 million residents and the nation’s cultural, political and business centre. The Erste Bank Open, played each year in late October, is regularly frequented by the world’s Top 10 players.
