Illya Marchenko upsets third seed Benjamin Becker in the final of the 11th edition of the Ethias Trophy to claim the ATP Challenger title in Mons.
The 28-year-old Ukrainian, who appeared in his first final of the season, fired 14 aces and capitalized on five of his nine break points, winning 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 in two hours and eight minutes. Marchenko took his fourth Challenger crown, his first since lifting the trophy in Brescia last November. The world number 111 earns €15,300 in prize money and gains 125 ATP ranking points.
“I am so happy with this victory. I played a great first set but than Becker showed he is a great player. It is a Challenger with a real high level and I came back every year because I love this tournament so much. So now winning it is a great achievement and I’m very happy. I have no words,” Marchenko told.
Earlier the day, Ruben Bemelmans and Philipp Petzschner claimed the doubles title, winning 6-3, 6-1 against Rameez Junaid and Igor Zelenay in only 45 minutes.
