Top Italians At Copa Sevilla Advance To Third Round

The ATP Challenger returned to Southern Spain this week for the 29th edition of the Copa Sevilla held at the Real Club de Tenis Betis. Seeded players stepped into second-round action of the €69,280 clay-court event on Tuesday.

Fourth favourite Paolo Lorenzi from Italy, who is seeking his first title of the season, defeated Nicolas Alvarez of Peru 7-5, 6-3. The World No. 121 won 86 per cent of his first-service points to advance in one hour and 56 minutes. Lorenzi will next take on No. 16 seed Carlos Taberner, who emerged victorious from the all-Spanish affair with veteran Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-0.

Defending champion Kimmer Coppejans came back from a set down to overcome Carlos Gomez-Herrera from Spain. The No. 5 seed from Belgium capitalized on seven of his 14 break point chances to secure a 16, 6-2, 7-6(5) in two hours and 37 minutes. Coppejans will next play Julian Ocleppo of Italy, who knocked out 2000 champion  Tommy Robredo of Spain 7-6(1), 7-5.

13th seed Viktor Galovic booked his spot in the third round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Frenchman Maxime Chazal. The 28-year-old from Croatia saved the only break point he faced and converted two of his own chances to prevail after one hour and 25 minutes. Up next for Galovic will be Italy’s Salvatore Caruso, the tournament’s No. 2, who eased past Maxime Hamou of France by the score of 6-0, 6-3 in 63 minutes.
