Daniil Medvedev is the champion of the St. Petersburg Open. The World No. 4 from Russia has clinched his third title of 2019 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Borna Coric of Croatia in Sunday’s singles final.

Medvedev struck seven aces and won 78 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 12 minutes. The top seed of the ATP 250 event leads this season in total match wins (54), hard-court match wins (41), and singles finals (8).

“After the match, you could see how happy I was. Especially beating Borna, who is an amazing player,” said Medvedev, as quoted on the ATP Tour website. “I lost three times to him last year in a row. It was an amazing final and an amazing week. Many people didn’t believe in me this week… I came here to win and I did it.”

By lifting his third ATP Tour title of the season, Medvedev will receive 250 ATP Rankings points and $203,410 in prize money. He has become the first Russian to win the tournament since 2004.

Sharan/Zelenay win first team title

Earlier in the day, Divij Sharan of India and Igor Zelenay from Slovakia took the doubles title, playing their first tournament as a team. They defeated the all-Italian combination of Matteo Berrettini and Simone Bolelli 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.

“I really like this tournament,” Sharan said. “It’s great to have lifted the title here.”

Sharan improved to 5-2 in doubles finals, and Zelenay won his first ATP Tour doubles title. They will receive 250 ATP Doubles Rankings points and split $66,740 in prize money.

“It’s a great feeling because this is my first ATP title. So I was waiting too long for it,” Zelenay added. “We played well all week.” –
