Evans Into Second Round After Successful Stockholm Debut

STOCKHOLM, October 15, 2019

No. 8 seed Dan Evans made a successful debut at the Intrum Stockholm Open by reaching the second round of the ATP 250 event. The new British No. 1 battled past Bernard Tomic of Australia on Monday evening, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

Evans struck nine aces and won 67 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 52 minutes. The World No. 43 from Birmingham will next take on either Filip Krajinovic of Serbia or #NextGenATP Norwegian Casper Ruud.

Janko Tipsarevic has won his first main draw match since Geneva in May. The 35-year-old from Serbia defeated French youngster Corentin Moutet 6-2, 6-4. Tipsarevic outpointed his rival 60-40 after one hour and 12 minutes to set a second-round clash with top seed Fabio Fognini from Italy.

Earlier in the day, Stefano Travaglia upset No. 6 seed Reilly Opelka from the United States, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. In his first match in Stockholm, the 27-year-old Italian withstood 30 aces and broke the World No. 37’s serve two times to secure victory in one hour and 52 minutes. Travaglia will next play either local favourite Elias Ymer or lucky loser Yuichi Sugita from Japan.
