Thiago Monteiro has clinched his third title of the season by winning the $54,060 Lima Challenger, held at the Club Terrazas Miraflores in Lima. The No. 3 seed from Brazil fought past Federico Coria of Argentina 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final.
Monteiro, who only dropped one set en-route to the championship match against Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in the third round, won 82 per cent of his first-service points and broke his rival’s serve six times to secure victory in two hours and 29 minutes.
Following his triumphs in Braunschweig, Germany and Punta del Este, Uruguay, the 25-year-old from Fortaleza has become the first Brazilian since 2011 to lift three trophies in one season. Monteiro collected in Peru $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.
On Saturday, Ariel Behar of Uruguay and Gonzalo Escobar from Ecuador clinched the doubles title. The No. 3 seeds had to go distance to overcome Luis David Martinez from Venezuela and Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves 6-2, 2-6, 10-3. The final lasted one hour and 14 minutes.
