James Duckworth is the champion of the City of Playford Tennis International. The No. 2 seed of the $54,160 ATP Challenger event defeated the tournament’s top seed Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan 7-6(2), 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final at the Playford City Tennis Centre.
Duckworth, who advanced to the title match without losing a set, sent down eight aces, saved the only break point he faced and broke his opponent’s serve one time to prevail after one hour and 34 minutes.
“It was a tough match but I’m absolutely pumped to get another one,” Duckworth said, as quoted by Tennis Australia. “To play on home soil and get the win is extra special.”
By lifting his ninth ATP Challenger career trophy, his third of the season following his triumphs in Bangkok, Thailand and Baotou, China, the 27-year-old Australian pocketed in South Australia $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

Earlier in the day, Harri Heliovaara and Patrik Niklas-Salminen took the doubles title. The unseeded Finnish duo upset the tournament’s No. 1 Ruben Gonzales from Indonesia and US-American Evan King 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-7. The encounter lasted one hour and 24 minutes.
