LONDON, November 16, 2019

Dominic Thiem will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas for the ATP Finals title on Sunday. The World No. 5 from Austria defeated reigning champion Alexander Zverev 7-5, 6-3 in the stage of the last four on Saturday afternoon at London’s O2-Arena.

Thiem saved all four break points he faced and capitalized on two of his own five chances to become the first Austrian to reach the final of the season-ending championships after one hour and 34 minutes.

“This is just a big, big dream coming true for me,” Thiem said. “It is unreal to me and to beat the defending champion, a very good friend and unbelievable player – it is an unbelievable achievement. I’m very very happy.

“This is one of the biggest and most prestigious tournaments of the whole year and I’m getting the chance to play the final.”

Thiem and Tsitsipas, who beat Roger Federer in the afternoon session, will meet for the seventh time with the Austrian leading their head-to-head record 4-2. Thiem also won the last match between the two at Beijing earlier this season.

“I always had a pretty good relationship with him,” Thiem said about his upcoming opponent. “But the Laver Cup we all get to know each other very close, and this year the chemistry was great, was really nice. We had a lot of fun. They’re all very nice and very funny guys, so we had a great time. But, yeah, once we take the step on the court, it’s a battle and we forget for two, three hours our friendships.”

Doubles final set

Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut will face Raven Klaasen of South Africa and Michael Venus from New Zealand in the doubles final. Klaasen and Venus saved two match points to beat Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 6-7(5), 7-6(10), 10-6.

Later in the day, the Frenchmen advanced to their second straight Nitto ATP Finals championship match, beating 2017 finalists Lukasz Kubot from Poland and Brazilian Marcelo Melo 6-3, 7-6(4).
