The first day of competition at the Davis Cup by Rakuten Madrid Finals drew to a close with an attendance of more than twelve thousand spectators. In total, 12,114 people watched the matches between Croatia and Russia on Centre Court, Italy and Canada on Court 2, and Belgium and Colombia on Court 3.

All the ties, made up of three matches – two singles and one doubles – were preceded by an opening ceremony unprecedented in the history of the competition. After a spectacular audiovisual start, the 18 teams competing this week in Madrid paraded, with DJ Alan Walker and Farruko entertaining the crowds to bring the ceremony to a close.

These attendance figures can be added to the more than eight thousand people (8,316) who attended Sunday’s Open Day, where fans could watch their teams training.

Today, Tuesday, November 19, Centre Court will host duels between Spain and Russia from 6pm. Tickets for this tie of the Group Phase in Group B have been sold out for several weeks, with a full 12,000 spectators expected on Centre Court. The day promises other thrilling clashes; Centre Court, starting at 11am, hosts the tie between Argentina and Chile. The other teams in action today are France, Japan, the United States, Canada, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Australia and Colombia. Tomorrow, Wednesday, will see the debut for Novak Djojovic’s Serbia and Britain’s team, with Andy Murray in their ranks.
