Constant Lestienne and Jozef Kovalik will play for the last title on the ATP Challenger Tour by reaching the singles final of the inaugural Maia Open. Kovalik emerged victorious from Saturday’s all-Slovakian semi-final with top seed Andrej Martin 6-1, 6-4.
The No. 10 seed from Bratislava capitalized on three of his four break point chances to advance in one hour and 16 minutes.
Lestienne knocked out local favourite Joao Domingues. The unseeded Frenchman rallied from a set down to overcome the 26-year-old Portuguese 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-2. Lestienne won five points less than his opponent but secured victory after two hours and 18 minutes.
Lestienne could lift his second career trophy on the ATP Challenger. Kovalik is seeking his second title of the season following his triumph at the Szczecin Open in September. En route to the final, the 27-year-old from Slovakia beat Lestienne in the only meeting between the two so far.
Later in the day, Andre Begemann and Daniel Masur clinched their fist team title. The all-German duo edged past Spaniards Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and David Vega Hernandez 7-6(2), 6-4 in the doubles final. The encounter lasted one hour and 25 minutes.
