Sixteen-year olds William Cooksey of Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., and Sydni Ratliff of Gahanna, Ohio, each won the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18s National Indoor Championships singles titles this past weekend. Cooksey and Ratliff claimed their first USTA National Championship.
Cooksey took home the boys’ 18s singles title after 17-year old Marcus McDaniel of Vacaville, Calif., withdrew with an illness. McDaniel wrapped up the boys’ doubles title the day before at the Overland Park Racquet Club in Overland Park, Kan. Ratliff defeated Clarkston, Mich., native Julia Fliegner, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, to win the Girls’ 18s singles title at the Indianapolis Racquet Club in Indianapolis.
At The Longfellow Tennis and Fitness Club in Wayland, Mass., No. 7 seed Michael Zheng, of Montville, N.J., overtook Walker Oberg, of Weston, Mass., 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, to claim the Boys’ 16s singles title. Liv Hovde of McKinney, Texas, was the only player to sweep the singles and doubles titles, doing so at the USTA Girls’ 16s National Indoor Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.
In addition to McDaniel and Hovde, Cole Stelse and Ashley Matz were the other players to win a title after featuring in both the singles and doubles finals of their respective age divisions. Stelse, of Scottsdale, Ariz., attained the Boys’ 14s singles title and was a finalist in doubles. Matz, of Brookfield, Wis., achieved the same feat in Manchester, Mass., at the Girls’ 12s championships.
