Belgian veteran Ruben Bemelmans took the title of the Internationale Herrentennismeisterschaften der Metropolregion Rhein-Necker um den MLP Cup 2020 to celebrate his second triumph on the carpet at Racket Center in Nußloch, Germany following his win in 2015.
The 32-year-old battled past Czech teenager Jonas Forejtek, who clinched the trophy of the US Open Junior Championships and was the top-ranked juniors last season, 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-2 in Sunday’s singles final of the $25.000 ITF World Tennis Tour event.
Following an exciting semi-finals Saturday with both players winning in the tie-break of the third set, the championship match also went the distance. 18-year-old Forejtek, who is based at the Alexander Waske Tennis-University in Offenbach, claimed the first set in the tie-break 7-4. Left-handed Bemelmans fought back to level score, winning the second frame also in the tie-break. The World No. 260 from Belgium gained the two decisive breaks in the final set to secure victory after two hours and nine minutes.
Bemelmans, who captured his first title since the inaugural ATP Challenger event in Koblenz 2017, earned €3.240 in prize money as well as 20 ATP Points, to climb about 20 positions in the ATP Ranking.
The Genk native celebrated his 13th career trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour in addition to his five titles earned on the ATP Challenger Tour. Bemelmans will move on to the ATP Challenger event in Quimper, France next week, facing Frenchman Manuel Guinard in the opening round.
Pilsen-born Forejtek, who clinched his maiden title on the ITF Pro Circuit in Vogau,Austria last season, will enter the Top 500 for the first time.
