Kudla Starts Cleveland Open Title Bid With Win

CLEVELAND, February 13, 2020

Ten more singles players secured their places in the third round of the Cleveland Open presented by Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday.

Top seeded US-American Denis Kudla took the courts for the first time, defeating former USC standout Roberto Quiroz from Ecuador in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. US-Americans Ernesto Escobedo and Maxime Cressey also beat their opponents in straight sets to join Kudla in the third round.

In the night cap, John Jeffrey Wolf and Ryan Harrison both took out opponents from Austria in thrilling three set matches. No. 6 seed Wolf rallied past recent Dallas champion Jurij Rodionov 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and Harrison edged past No. 3 seed Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3.


In doubles action, the second seeded team of Min Kyu Song and Ji Sung Nam of South Korea took out the Cleveland team of Nico Mostardi from the United States and James Hopper of Great Britain 6-4, 6-4.

Thursday is an action packed day of third round singles and quarterfinal doubles matches. Top seed Denis Kudla will take on fellow US-American Sebastian Korda, along with Michael Mmoh from the United States will take on former Ohio State player Mikael Torpegaard of Denmark. In the night session, John Jeffrey Wolf will look to continue his momentum against former World No. 21 Thomaz Bellucci from Brazil.

Admission to the Cleveland Open presented by Cleveland Clinic is free February 10-13, with tickets available for the quarterfinals (February 14), semifinals (February 15) and finals (February 16). Tickets are available by visiting the tournament website.
