CLEVELAND, February 15, 2020
The 48-man-draw has been whittled down to the final four at the Cleveland Open presented by Cleveland Clinic. No. 9 seed Ernesto Escobedo leads the semi-finals line-up following a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory over the tournament’s top seed and fellow US-American Denis Kudla on Friday.
Escobedo fired 16 aces and saved all six break point chances he faced to advance after two hours and 27 minutes. The World No. 209 and three-time ATP Challenger champion will next take on Yosuke Watanuki of Japan, who took down Ulises Blanch from the United States 7-5, 7-5 in one hour and 28 minutes.
Former Ohio State Buckeye Mikael Torpegaard from Denmark edged past US-American Raymond Sarmiento 6-4, 6-4. Torpegaard will take on Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil after he defeated Frenchman Geoffrey Blancaneaux 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 19 minutes.
In the doubles draw, Treat Huey from the Philippines and US-American Nathaniel Lammons beat Robert Galloway from the United States and Hans Hach Verdugo of Mexico 6-3, 7-6(5) to punch their ticket into the final.
Saturday’s action at the Cleveland Open presented by Cleveland Clinic will feature both singles semi-finals and the second doubles semi-final. Both the singles and doubles final are scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Tickets are available by visiting the tournament website.
