LONDON, November 13, 2015
The team responsible for producing and maintaining the luscious grass courts at the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club every year has been named Tennis Grounds Team of the Year by the Institute of Groundsmanship.
Grounds Manager Graham Kimpton has been part of the operation for more than 30 years, working alongside and then taking over from his father David in 2009. David began his own time in charge of the grounds at The Queen’s Club in 1966. “I am obviously thrilled and very proud that my team were announced as winners. It is reward for all of their hard work over the year,” said Graham Kimpton.
The grounds team’s eight members have, between them, more than 100 years of service at the club, 13 acres in their charge and 4,000 members to provide for, as well as responsibility for the courts at the Aegon Championships. This year in July, the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal between GB and France was also staged at The Queen’s Club.
Aegon Championships Tournament Director Stephen Farrow, said: “Every year our players talk about the quality of the grass courts at the Aegon Championships, and this award is testament to the efforts and expertise of Graham and his team. We are delighted that they have been recognised and rewarded in this way.”
Other notable winners were Murrayfield, Manchester City FC and Sussex CCC. The 2016 edition of the Aegon Championships takes place 13th-19th June.
