Chilean Cristian Garin won his fourth ATP Tour title on Sunday, defeating Italian qualifier Gianluca Mager, who knocked out top seed Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals, 7-6(3), 7-5 to triumph at the Rio Open presented by Claro.

It was the second win of the day for the third seed, who completed a rain-suspended semi-final victory against fifth seed Borna Coric earlier in the afternoon.

Reigning BMW Open and Houston champion Garin broke Mager’s serve three times and won 52 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 34 minutes.

“I think this is a gift from all those years working hard, suffering. This is my dream. I’m enjoying it,” Garin said. “I didn’t expect this ever in my life. I’m so, so happy.”

The 23-year-old Santiago native now owns a personal-best nine-match winning streak, having also lifted the trophy at the Cordoba Open.

“I’m really emotional and winning the Rio Open means a lot to me. It’s hard to describe this past week. I slept only four or five hours and woke up nervous this morning and it ended up being one of the best days of my life.”

By celebrating his biggest triumph of his professional tennis career, Garin earned $355,530 in prize money as well as 500 ATP Ranking points. He will next play his home tournament in Santiago.

Granollers/Zeballos win doubles title

Later in the afternoon, Marcel Granollers of Spain and Argentine Horacio Zeballos took the doubles title. The No. 3 seeds fought past Italian qualifiers Salvatore Caruso and Federico Gaio 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 in one hour and 40 minutes.

The champions split $114,200 and each earn 500 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
