BOSTON, March 4, 2020
Tennis legend and former World No. 1 John McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam champion and captain of Team World, was in Boston on Tuesday to launch ticket sales for Laver Cup 2020, which will take place at TD Garden, home of the National Basketball Association team Boston Celtics and the National Hockey League team Boston Bruins. The event will be held from September 25-27.
McEnroe was welcomed to TD Garden by Mayor Martin J. Walsh ahead of meeting Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward. Tuesday marked the 40th anniversary of McEnroe reaching the No.1 singles ranking for the first time back on March 3, 1980.
“It’s great to visit this beautiful city of Boston,” said McEnroe. “This is a phenomenal sports town and I expect fans will raise the roof for the home team.
“Laver Cup 2018 was unbelievably close thanks to the energy of the home crowd. I’m sure Boston will continue that tradition at TD Garden, one of the best venues in the world.
“We were leading last year in Geneva, we were so, so close. I hope all of Boston gets behind us. The home court advantage together with our incredible team spirit and phenomenal players could be the magic ingredient that takes down our Team Europe opponents.”
The three-day team competition, created to honor past legends of the game, pits the best six players from Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg, against their counterparts from the rest of the World. To date the Laver Cup has sold out stadiums in Prague, Chicago and most recently Geneva.
Tickets for the fourth edition of the unique team competition go on sale Friday, March 6 at 10:00am Eastern Time via Ticketmaster.
