Aleksandar Vukic headlined Wednesday’s second-round action at the Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey. The World No. 244 from Australia knocked out No. 2 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Vukic, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the Oracle Pro Series Columbus last week, continued his good run of form in Mexico. The 23-year-old fired 15 aces and won 80 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in one hour and 32 minutes. Up next for Vukic will be compatriot and No. 15 seed Bernard Tomic.
Earlier on Estadio GNP Seguros, the top seed of the ATP Challenger 100 hard-court event, Adrian Mannarino, opened his title bid with a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win over Harry Bourchier from Australia. The World No. 41 from France saved all three break points he faced and converted three of his own nine break point chances to advance after one hour and 24 minutes. Mannarino will next face No. 14 seeded Canadian Peter Polansky, who edged past US-American Evan King 6-2, 6-3.
Guilherme Clezar emerged victorious from the all-South-American battle with Federico Coria of Argentina. The 27-year-old Brazilian knocked out the No. 5 seed 6-1, 6-7(5), 7-6(5) in two hours and 15 minutes to take on Kevin King from the United States. The Atlanta native fought past No. 12 seed Brayden Schnur of Canada 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-5. The encounter lasted two hours and 13 minutes.
