Dustin Brown won the battle between the two remaining seeds at the € 42,500 ATP Challenger Trofeo Città di Brescia on Thursday. The tournament’s number eight defeated third seed Illya Marchenko 6-3, 6-2. Brown didn’t face a break point, hitting 16 aces to seal victory in 49 minutes.
The German world number 124 will take on Mirza Basic next. The 24-year-old from Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Swiss qualifier Marco Chiudinelli 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in just under two hours of play.
Luca Vanni defeated Norbert Gombos, winning 6-4, 6-4. The world number 115 from Italy fired 12 aces, saved the only break point he faced and converted two of his own to prevail in 64 minutes to reach his fourth semi-final of the season.
Vanni will face Igor Sijsling in the stage of the final four. The 28-year-old Dutchman cruised past Farrukh Dustov, winning 6-3, 6-4 in only 48 minutes.
“I feel good, I played three good matches. I have got used to the quick surface here. I am enjoying myself and I feel confident on the court,” told Sijsling, after reaching the semi-finals without dropping a set.
“Luca is a very good player, serving bit and returning well. He is also very solid from the baseline, so it will be a difficult match,” the world number 167 from Amsterdam is looking forward to his second tour meeting with Vanni. Sijsling lost the last match with the Italian in the tie-break of the final set in Brest this year.
