The first round concluded on Wednesday at the € 42,500 Andria E Castel Del Monte ATP Challenger with top seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in action. The world number 104 from Georgia ousted James McGee 7-6, 6-4. Basilashvili withstood eight aces and broke his opponent’s service two times to prevail in one hour and 34 minutes to meet Jan Satral next.
Fifth seed and Italian wild card Luca Vanni rallied back from a set down to overcome Nikola Mektic, winning 1-6, 6-3, 7-6. The 30-year-old from Castel del Paino fired 12 aces and won 82% of his first service points to seal victory in two hours and eight minutes. Vanni will face Marco Chiudinelli next.
Croatian qualifier Ante Pavic beat Andrea Arnaboldi, winning 6-4, 6-2. The 26-year-old Zagreb resident saved three of the four break points he faced and converted four of his own to set a second round meeting with fourth seed Dudi Sela after 70 minutes.
With the start of the second round matches, sixth seed Michael Berrer defeated Matteo Viola 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Egor Gerasimov advanced to the quarterfinals, winning 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 over Belgian qualifier Joris De Loore and Roberto Marcora ousted Gianluca Mager 7-6, 6-0.
