In July 1999 Prince Oladunjoye had the idea of having a tennis tournament in Lagos state that would attract players from around the globe. The inaugural event took place in August 2000 and had a prize money of US-$ 43,000. For the third edition during October 2003 it was increased to US-$ 50,000.

The two weeks combined tournaments are part of the ITF Pro Circuit. The GOVERNOR’S CUP LAGOS TENNIS offers valuable ATP as well as WTA Tour ranking points for the participants to move up the international tennis ladder. GOVERNOR’S CUP LAGOS TENNIS is sponsored majorly by ETISALAT and FCMB, both are leading companies in the telecommunication and financial services industries respectively.

The event showcases players from over 40 countries spread across all continents (Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Oceania) and they currently compete for the total prize money of US-$ 80,000, which is raising the heat at the “Centre of Excellence” Lagos State.

Top-seed Aldin Setkic captured the title of the first US-$ 15,000 men’s tournament. The world number 219 from Bosnia-Herzegovina defeated sixth seed Sadio Doumbia from France in Saturday’s final, winning 6-2, 6-0 in only 58 minutes. Setkic didn’t drop a set on his way to lift his fourth ITF title of the season.

The US-$ 25,000 women’s event was won by only 17-year-old Tessah Andrianjafitrimo from France. The world number 490 from Montpellier ousted fifth seed Tadeja Majeric, winnin the final 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. It was the first ITF pro singles title for the teenager.
