Copa Sevilla Challenger Cancelled

Copa Sevilla

SEVILLA, August 13, 2020

The 2020 edition of the Copa Sevilla has been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This was announced by the organizers of the unique yellow clay-court event, held at the Club de Tenis Betis in Seville, Spain on Friday.

The tournament was set to celebrate its 30th ATP Challenger and 58th edition overall this September. In 1991, the inaugural Copa Sevilla as part of the ATP Challenger Tour took place. Three decades later, the historic event in Andalusia is still going strong. It recently celebrated back-to-back 17-year-old champions Casper Ruud of Norway in 2016 and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in 2017. Last year, NextGen ATP Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina lifted his maiden Challenger trophy.

A suspension happened only once before, when in 1973 rain forced to cancel the tournament on the day of the semi-finals. The Copa Sevilla will return next year, scheduled for September 6 to 12, 2021.
