Bianca Andreescu

STARNBERG, August 17, 2020

Bianca Andreescu announced that she will not participate in the U.S. Open, saying that coronavirus is behind her decision. The player didn’t participate in matches since October when she played in the WTA Tour. It seems that people will not be able to check WTA tennis odds or the Canadian player in a while now, since the pandemic affected her condition.

Why Did Andreescu Withdraw?

Many fans were eager to see the Canadian player this tennis season, but sadly, she announced that she’s pulling out from the U.S. Open. One of the reasons was her injury, but the other was the COVID-19 situation. According to her, the pandemic didn’t let her practice enough so she’s not in the best fitness condition, which didn’t allow her to get back to her best.

Last year, the Canadian won against none other than Serena Williams, so people are disappointed that someone who secured such an important win will not be seen anytime soon. Still, Andreescu wants to be back when she’s at her best.

“After many discussions with those closest to me, I have made the difficult decision not to return to New York this year,” she declared. “I have taken this step in order to focus on my match fitness and ensure that I return ready to play at my highest level. The US Open victory last year has been the high point of my career thus far and I will miss not being there. However, I realize that the unforeseen challenges, including the COVID pandemic, have compromised my ability to prepare and compete to the degree necessary to play at my highest level.”

Andreescu is not the only one who pulled out of the event because of the coronavirus, though. Rafael Nadal also announced his withdrawal after some consideration. Out of the Big Three in men’s tennis, only one will be present, as Roger Federer will also be absent due to his right knee operations.

Serena Williams Praises Bianca Andreescu

Serena Williams speaks highly of Bianca Andreescu and she thinks that if it wasn’t for the injury, the Canadian would’ve played in the U.S. Open.

“She’ll come back. She’ll do well when she’s ready. She’s smart enough to play if not injured,” she said after finding out about the Canadian player’s withdrawal from the event. “I haven’t actually talked to her. I just know the secret that I like her. As a person and as a player I think she’s so mature and so cool.”

However, now that both her and Nadal are withdrawing because of the pandemic, It means both the defending champions in singles will be absent this year. Fans are going to miss them, but they will surely come back later with new forces.

Final Thoughts

COVID-19 is affecting everyone in a way or another, and Bianca Andreescu is no exception. Since the pandemic affected her training a lot, she claims she’s not in good enough condition to participate. Hopefully, she will get back to her great condition soon and we’ll be able to see her in other major events.
