Wawrinka Overcomes Otte Challenge At Prague Open

Stan Wawrinka has advanced to the quarterfinals of the € 137,560 I.CLTK Prague Open 2020 by Moneta. The top seed from Switzerland rallied from a set down to overcome in-form German Oscar Otte 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Wawrinka withstood nine aces and broke his opponent’s serve three times to prevail after one hour and 54 minutes. Up next for the three-time Grand Slam champion will be No. 6 seed Sumat Nagal of India, who also had to go the distance against 18-year-old Czech wild card entry Jiri Lehecka. The World No. 127 secure a 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory in two hours and 21 minutes.

Michael Vrbensky, another local favourite competing in the ATP Challenger 125 clay-court event, received a walkover from No. 4 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber. The 36-year-old German couldn’t play due to stomach ache. Vrbensky awaits Elias Ymer of Sweden in the stage of the final eight.

Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert is the highest ranked player in the bottom half of the draw. The No. 3 seed fought past Zdenek Kolar from the Czech Republic 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3. Herbert won one point more than his opponent to finish the encounter after two hours and 19 minutes. The World No. 71 will next face Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands.

In the remaining quarterfinal on Thursday, No. 7 seed Henri Laaksonen from Switzerland will meet Aslan Karatsev of Russia, who knocked out Latvian veteran and No. 14 seed Ernests Gulbis, winning 6-2, 6-3.
