OSTRAVA, September 2, 2020
The top two seeds of the €132,280 Ostrava Open by Moneta opened their title with a first-round win on Wednesday. Henri Laaksonen, the tournament’s No. 1 from Switzerland, defeated Brayden Schnur from Canada 7-5, 6-1. The World No. 130 capitalized on six of his 26 break point chances to advance after one hour and 44 minutes. Laaksonen will next take on Botic van den Zandschulp from the Netherlands.
Earlier on Centre Court, Ilya Ivashka fought past Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva 6-4, 7-6(4). The No. 2 seed from Belarus outpointed his opponent 91-85 to prevail after two hours and 10 minutes. Up next for Ivashka will be Serbian veteran Viktor Trocki.
Lukas Rosol delighted the home crowd following a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over No. 3 seed Hyeon Chung of Korea, who was seeking his first match win in 2020. The 2017 Next-Gen-ATP champion struggled with injuries in 2016 (abdominal), 2018 (foot blisters and right ankle) and 2019 (back).
Thirty-five year-old Rosol came back from set and a break down, winning 53 per cent of the total points played to reach the second round after one hour and 37 minutes. The local favourite will next face in-form German Oscar Otte, who rallied past Aleksandar Vukic of Australia 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In other action, Aslan Karatsev of Russia continued his good run of form with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Czech wild card entry Tomas Machac, winner of this year’s Koblenz Open ATP Challenger. Karatsev, champion of the RPM Prague Open by Moneta last week, sent down nine aces and won 85 per cent of his first-service points to set a second-round clash with No. 4 seed Ernests Gulbis from Latvia. The encounter lasted one hour and 24 minutes.
