Top seed and defending champion Pablo Andujar has booked his spot in the quarterfinal of the Moneta Czech Open. The World No. 56 benefited from the retirement of Lorenzo Giustino, leading 6-0, 3-0 in his second-round match on Wednesday. The 28-year-old Italian was forced to stop playing due to a right elbow injury.
“I played really well, I made a few mistakes but showed a solid performance,” said Andujar, one of the favourites to lift the trophy in Prostejov. “Everyone who comes to the tournament wants to win it. You have to say that the field is very strong here. I go from match to match, always focusing on the next opponent and trying not to set any goals.”
Andujar seems to enjoy his stay in the Czech Republic. “l would like to emphasize that the tournament director and the organizers in general are doing a great job. It is very important for us players and we are very grateful for that. Everyone takes good care of us. Let us hope that this crisis will soon pass and we will soon return to normal,” he said.
The 34-year-old Spaniard will next take on Jozef Kovalik from Slovakia, who fought past Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 in one hour and 45 minutes.

Aleksandar Vukic of Australia caused the upset of the day when he knocked out No. 2 seed and three-time Prostejov champion Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic. Vukic fired 13 aces and won 76 per cent of his first service points to secure a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory in one hour and 32 minutes. Up next for Vukic will be No. 6 seed Kamil Majchrzak of Poland.
