World No. 16 Karen Khachanov of Russia, who was scheduled to play the qualifying, and Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann have been awarded the final two wild cards into the main draw of the Hamburg Europan Open. This was announced by the organizers of the ATP 500 event on Friday.
Following Dominik Köpfer’s run into the quarterfinals of this week’s BNL Internzionali d’Italia in Rome, the 26-year-old will enter the Rothenbaum tournament directly with a special exempt. His previously awarded wild card has been given to Hanfmann, who finished runner-up to Miomir Kecmanovic at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel last week. Main draw ceremony will take place on Saturday at 1 pm local time.

Qualifying starts on Saturday
The Hamburg European Open is kicking off with the qualifying on Saturday, led by World No. 49 Tennys Sandgren. The top seed from the United States will face Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in the first round of the 16-man draw. 2011 Hamburg champion Gilles Simon of France will take on German wild card entry Mats Rosenkranz.
The other four Germans in action will also face strong competition. Youngster Marvin Möller will oppose No. 2 seed Yoshihito Nishioko of Japan, Milan Welte will play No. 8 seed Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic, Kevin Krawietz will challenge No. 6 seed and 2016 Hamburg finalist Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay, and Mats Moraing will face Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan. Four players will earn a spot in the main draw.
