Brayden Schnur headlined the action on Wednesday at the Wolffkran Open by knocking out World No. 78 and the tournament’s top seed Federico Delbonis from Argentina 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-3. The 25-year-old Canadian fired 16 aces and saved all six break points he faced to reach the second round of the €44,820 ATP Challenger tournament after one hour and 57 minutes.
“I played really well today and served big in the important moments, which helped as the courts are pretty fast,” Schnur told Tennis TourTalk after his win. “I have never played a tournament on carpet before. I did practice and feels a bit like playing on grass. I enjoy this surface a lot.”
Schnur will next take on Marc-Andrea Huesler from Switzerland, who battled past Dustin Brown of Germany 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(5) in just under two hours of play.
“It is always tough to play against Dustin,” said Huesler, who likes to play on the fast carpet in Ismaning. “Only few points made the difference. I was a break down in the third set and it was mentally tough. I stayed focused and served well in the tie-break of the final set. I lost a couple of close matches here in the past, so I am happy to win today.”
Korda defeats Kolar
In other first-round action, Sebastian Korda also had to go the distance to overcome Zdenek Kolar from the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The No. 5 seed from the United States capitalized on five of his eight break-point opportunities to secure victory in one hour and 46 minutes.
“It was my first singles match on carpet. It was difficult to get used to it but after the first set it became comfortable and it was a good match after that,” said Korda, son of Petr Korda, champion of the 1998 Australian Open. “When I am at home we practice together but I usually travel with one of my coaches from the USTA. My father is definitely a big help for me. He knows how to play good tennis and how to get to the top.”
Up next for 20-year-old Korda will be German qualifier Julian Lenz.
Hanfmann opens home campaign
Later in the evening, Yannick Hanfmann opened his title bid with a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over fellow German Yannick Maden. The No. 2 seed and champion of the first edition in Ismaning back in 2017, struck 16 aces and won 68 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and three minutes.
