STARNBERG, November 3, 2020
Following the Wolffkran Open in Ismaning and the Tennis Challenger in Hamburg, a three-week indoor swing in Germany will conclude the coming weekend with the 24th edition of the Challenger Eckental, held on carpet at the House of Sports in Eckental.
Main draw action at the €88,520 ATP Challenger 100 event kicked off on Monday and two German wild card entries booked their spot in the second round. Mats Rosenkranz caused the upset of the day by knocking out No. 8 seed Martin Klizan of Slovakia. The World No. 603 from Essen sent down eight aces and won 96 per cent of his first-service points to secure a 6-2, 6-2 victory in one hour and three minutes. Twenty-two-year-old Rosenkranz will next take on German qualifier Marvin Möller, who edged out Illya Marchenko from the Ukraine 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
Teenager Max Rehberg earned his first match win at Challenger level and his first eight ATP Ranking points when Russian veteran Teymuraz Gabashvili retired with the 17-year-old German leading 7-6(3), 5-2 due to a right shoulder injury. Rehberg will next play No. 4 seed Evgeny Donskoy of Russia, who beat his compatriot Alexey Vatutin 6-1, 6-3 in 65 minutes.
