Federica di Sarra has clinched her third title of the season by winning the $15,000 ITF Val Gardena Südtirol held at the Tennis Club Ortisei in Italy. The 30-year-old Italian upset the tournament’s top seed Kathinka von Deichmann of Liechtenstein 6-3, 6-3 in Saturay’s singles final.
Di Sarra advanced to the championship match with wins over compatriots Anna Turati, Lisa Pigato and Stefania Rubini as well as Adriana Rajkovic. The World No. 335 withstood eight aces from von Deichmann in the final and broke her serve four times to secure victory in one hour and 22 minutes.
“I am very happy that we had the opportunity to play here,” di Sarra said. “It hasn’t been an easy year for all of us. We felt very comfortable here thanks to the organizers and the safety and health measures. I hope that the situation will soon improve.”
By winning her eighth career title, Di Sarra pocketed in South Tyrol $ 2,352 in prize money as well as 10 WTA Ranking points.
On Friday, Suzan Lamens from the Netherlands and Kimberley Zimmermann of Belgium took the doubles trophies. The unseeded duo fought past Federica di Sarra and Anastasia Kulikova from Finland 3-6, 6-4, 11-9. The encounter lasted one hour and 26 minutes.
