The ATP Challenger Tour has returned to America for the first time since March with the $52,080 Atlantic Tire Championships held on hard courts at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina, United States. The tournament celebrates its five-year anniversary hosting an USTA Pro Circuit event this week.

Top seed Thiago Monteiro opened his title bid on an unseasonably warm Tuesday with a first-round win over fellow Brazilian Guilherme Clezar, who was forced to stop playing due to groin pain while Monteiro leading 7-6(5), 3-2. The World No. 84 from Fortaleza will next take on Mikael Torpegaard from Denmark, who rallied past US-American wild card entry William Blumberg 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 17 minutes.

No. 4 seed Prajnesh Gunneswaran of India also booked his spot in the second round. The World No. 146 from Chennai defeated Canadian Peter Polansky 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 16 minutes.

Up next for Gunneswaran will be Jack Sock. The 28-year-old US-American, champion of four ATP Tour events, highlighted by his triumph at the Masters 1000 event in Paris-Bercy in 2017, is competing in his first tournament since losing to Dominic Thiem in the second round at Roland Garros in early October. Sock edged past compatriot Bjorn Fratangelo 7-6(11), 6-3. The World No. 253 won 53 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in two hours and 11 minutes.
